Murray River Motel - Swan Hill

Attractions

Swan Hill was named when the explorer, Major Thomas Mitchell, set up camp by the Murray, and had his sleep continually interrupted by the calls of the black swans on the river. His glowing reports of the area led to the establishment of the Murray Downs and Tyntyndyer properties in the mid 1800's. The Tyntyndyer homestead is now open as a fascinating living history museum.

PS Pyap
The Pioneer Settlement, which is only a 5 minute walk from the motel, is famous as a superbly recreated port town of the paddle steamer era. The Settlement features an entire main street of more than fifty historic buildings taken from Swan Hill and the surrounding districts. It also boasts a collection of restored carriages, old cars, trucks, tractors and a steam train. They even have wagon rides for the kids.

Your heritage experience would not be complete without a cruise on the historic paddleboat, the PS Pyap. Her daily hour long cruises take you along the many bends of the Marraboor and Murray rivers, recalling her own years of service as a trading boat. A wonderful time to soak up the Pioneer Settlement is at dusk when a spectacular light show illuminates the village for the 'Sound and Light Tour' - a 45 minute journey in which visitors are transported past all the Settlement's attractions with a finale of the ghostly emergence from the night of the mighty Paddlesteamer Gem.
